About me
Stefanie Van Gool is a Belgian flutist, born in Leuven in 2000. As an artist, she is eager to explore sounds beyond the traditional flute repertoire. She is passionate about Japanese music and contemporary repertoire as well as orchestral playing and chamber music.
Besides the modern classical flute, Stefanie plays the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese flute. With Project Z E N, she forms a bridge between modern music and traditional Japanese music, inviting the audience to reconnect with themselves and with each other. For this project, she draws inspiration from Zen Buddhism, with a particular focus on presence and awareness in her performances.
Her interest in contemporary music is reflected in collaborations with ensembles like Het Muziek (formerly Asko|Schönberg). Together with the ensemble, she recorded HUSH by Kaija Saariaho at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam in September 2026. In December 2025, she was selected as one of the laureates of Prima La Musica Zoekt Jong Talent, performing the contemporary work DNA in Music as a soloist under the direction of Dirk Brossé.
For Stefanie, presence and awareness are qualities she brings into other musical settings like orchestral playing and chamber music. She has performed in various youth and professional orchestras and was selected for the 2025-2026 season of the Dutch National Youth Orchestra. In addition, she regularly performs as a guest musician with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Netherlands.
Alongside orchestral playing, Stefanie is an active chamber music musician. Together with pianist Jakub Jirásek, she forms Duo Steia, bringing a variety of flute and piano repertoire. She is also a member of the Schulhoff Trio, which brings lesser-known works and arrangements for flute, viola, and contrabass to the stage.
